Remaining Not Out In Test Innings
One important quality of a batsman is remaining not out in an innings. It's equivalent to getting out after scoring infinite runs. This is the reason why test batting average is calculated for runs scored in career divided by number of innings played where the batsman was out (i.e. excluded not out innings). So today I while I am watching Sachin and Gambhir batting against South Africa after Sehwag and Dravid got out at 28 for 2 wickets, I am preparing this table. With 2 boundaries in Morkel's over Tendulkar just made sure they crossed half century partnership. I want him to stay not out today to bring India out of this yet another crisis.
Please note the column NO (number of not out innings) and the % (total innings played / number of not out innings * 100).
Please note the column NO (number of not out innings) and the % (total innings played / number of not out innings * 100).
I am happy to see Tendulkar in the top 5 and not surprised to see Steve Waugh on top. I am surprised to see Gavaskar hardly chipping in the 25th position while Sehwag and Lara are at the bottom of the table. This is one area where Bradman performs average with a 12.5% NO innings (10 out of 80 played). |

Measuring Average Differently: Highest Runs Per Innings Discounting Not Out
Here is another important number in cricket for batsmen with some modifications from me as a new year gift for the readers - highest batting average. The traditional way of measuring batting average is to divide the total career runs scored by the number of innings he played excluding the not out innings. This way we know before getting out, the batsmen scores how many runs on an average. Forget about the Bradman's magical 99.94, then the good batsmen averages around 50 to 60 runs before getting out once. Amongst our current players, Sangakkara, Tendulkar and Kallis are top in this list. You can get a pick of that list from CricInfo in the following URL - http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/282910.html
A few writers tries to say that the high average of Tendulkar is due to his many not out innings and Lara for his reason is in the lower 50s because of only 6 not out innings in his career (and o boy, 3 of them I call recall are 400*, 375* and famous 153*)! Instead they were saying that if you measure runs per test (no matter if the batsmen could play in both innings or one innings) and discount not outs, then Lara is quite ahead. That is a very unfair comparison because Lara played almost in all Tests in both the innings while Tendulkar didn't get a chance to play in the second innings in many Tests. Instead I believe the measurement below I gave (Runs Per Innings) will give the view they wanted to have, how many runs a batsmen score on an average in each innings played without giving any special tribute for remaining not out in any innings. I have taken a minimum of 5000 test runs scored to filter out bolwers and batsmen I am not interested about. Bradman again obviously comes first with 87.45. Apart from him there are only 10 batsmen who are above 50 with the second placed Jack Hobbs at 53.03.

Percentage of Innings Played Before Scoring Half Century (Out)
I was trying to use CricInfo StatsGuru to find out which batsmen in test cricket history have frequently failed to score significant runs before getting out. This will be slightly more interesting as it will not depend on the batsman's career average rather will calculate the percentage of his under-performing innings compared to his career average. For this I have made the following assumptions -
1. The innings where the batsmen scored 0 to 49 (less than a half century) will be considered as not-so-significant contribution to the team total. While it's subjective and not true (probably 0 to 39 makes more sense), I wanted to count half century as an achievement for that particular batsman in an innings irrespective of where his team stands.
2. I am counting only innings where he was out. So if a player remain o not out or 1 not out, that innings should not be counted as a under performing innings while even if he got out scoring 49 runs in a team total of 88, this method will count that innings as an under performing one.
3. I wanted to exclude bowlers who will have lots of scores (in fact most scores) within this range. For this, I believe a bar of setting at least 2000 test runs scored in career will work as a good filter.
4. The percentage will be calculated as, count of (under performing innings / total number of innings played in career) * 100.
5. I wanted to also mention the number of times the batsman got out scoring a duck.
With the assumptions above in mind, I could only reach to an imperfect table below and would like to have your help on figuring this out. I could not figure out a way to put career runs scored and I had to manually enter the career innings numbers from CricInfo. MS Excel helped me do the percentage calculation automatically though but I would like to limit it till 2 digits after decimal. The table below shows players who have at least played enough number of matches that generated at least 90 matches where he under performed. This criteria I set as I couldn't apply option#3 for filtering the results.

So I gave a post in Cricket Fan Forums where I know there are several expert cricket statisticians who can help me. And I got help within a few hours here - http://cricketfansforum.net/showthread.php?p=391099#post391099 from pappubahry. His list is sorted by failure rate (from lower rate to higher) for players with at least 3000 test run. I can now follow the process he mentioned and prepare separate tables for failure rate between 0-9, 0-19, 0-24 and 0-39. Or even 50-99, 100-149, 150-199 etc.

Part of Winning and Loosing Team - Most Number Of Times
While reading the article on Ponting, I became curious to know who are the people that were part of a winning team most of the times. And naturally with that comes the opposite question as well. So I opened CricInfo StatsGuru and figured it out quite easily. Here are the 2 tables.
Most Number Of Participations In A Winning Team
Ponting is in the top with 99 wins followed by all Australians that you can remember on top of your head! Kidding. But top 10 is almost exclusively taken by them, Boucher and Kallis somehow chipping in at the last moment. Tendulkar is just outside the top 10 list with 60 wins but I hope he will make into that elite group by next year.
Most Number Of Participations In A Loosing Team
Guess what, Brian Lara is in the top of that list with 63 losses while Tendulkar in joint fourth position along with our famous Ashraful and Australian Allan Border.
